This past weekend, I went to celebrate my nephew’s first birthday. As I thought about what to get him for his birthday gift, I realized that he already has many toys and that he would likely get more toys and clothes for his birthday. Then I realized that I can make him a snack basket that includes his favorite snacks plus a few new items. Here’s how I made it!

First, I needed to find a basket. I wanted the basket to be reusable and last for a long time. I ultimately landed at Michaels, and I was able to find a basket and a little wooden sign to add his name. Luckily, at this time of year, it was easy to find these items on sale, as it was the time for back-to-school sales. Next, I needed to get the snacks. For the snacks, I went to my local Target, but you could easily find these snacks at Walmart or your favorite grocery store. I wanted to have a variety of snacks, from healthy fruits to Goldfish crackers and Cheerios. Thus, created my collection of snacks. When buying snacks for a one-year-old, make sure to consider any food allergies and that the kid does not have all their teeth yet (so maybe not Doritos…).

Once I had everything, I arranged the gift basket to be visually appealing. I recommend placing tall bags toward the back of the basket and the shorter containers in the front. It creates a fuller effect and allows for a full view of everything included in the basket.

After arranging the snacks, I used the wooden sign to write my nephew’s name. To keep it simple, I just used a pencil and Sharpie to write his name, but you could use paint or chalkboard paint for a fancier effect. His party was also construction-themed, so I added an orange truck using Sharpie as well. The last step is to attach the sign to the basket. I used hot glue to glue it to the basket for a strong hold.

While many gift baskets have plastic wrap and ribbons, I decided to leave my gift unwrapped to allow easy access to the snacks and reduce clean-up from the party. When you make your gift basket, you may choose to add ribbons and some plastic wrap to protect the gift. The nice thing about making your gift basket is that you get to choose what goes in it, how much it costs to make, if it gets decorated, and how elaborate the basket should be.
While I made this snack basket for a toddler, everyone of all ages loves snack baskets. Especially when you include their favorite snacks. It is also possible to make them after a certain theme, such as holidays, colors, movies, and many more ideas. Will you make a gift basket for your next big event? Let us know down in the comments!
